Mythical Place Brochure

One of the best things that I got out of taking mythology, was surprisingly more experience with completing a project independently, and presenting it to the class.  On the left, is my mythical place brochure.  For this project, I had to choose from a list of mythical settings, complete research on it, and then create a brochure that would convince others to come visit it.  I chose Atlantis, because I have always been fascinated with its story, and wanted to find out more about it.

From just this one small project, I learned a lot about my capabilities as an independent student.  I commited to the assignment once it was given, and completed extensive research on Atlantis.  I learned a lot more about the origins of Atlantis, and its role in myths.  The brochure required me to use organizational skills and expand my creativity so I could display the facts in this persuasive way.  I also created it all on my iPad, and gained some more experience with technology.  Aside from providing an example of what my true effort can create, this project also forced me to get over my fears and present.  With every project I created in mythology, I had to present it to the class (full of students from every grade).  Although this is something I dread, I realize it is definitely an important skill that I need to improve.  I can already feel the results of this practice in my presentations, because although I am still very nervous, I have gotten better at managing and concealing my anxiety infront of an audience.  I feel that the experience in preparation and presentation that these projects give me are going to be very beneficial to me in the future.

Before/After Self Portraits

Shown here are the first and last assignments of my Design Foundations class.  For the first one (on the left), on the first day of school, I was given one class block to complete a self portrait.  The second one, however, was our last assignment for the semester and, after months of instruction, we were given weeks to complete it.

I believe that the difference in these two drawings show tremendous advancement in artistic ability.  I noticed that when I commit myself to putting in my time, dedication, effort and new knowledge into my artwork, that it becomes more realistic and proffessional looking.  There were many times in class when I thought that I simply couldn't improve my drawing, because I had already put in my best effort.  But, I found that by really focusing on what I was trying to copy onto the page (a picture of myself), I could always find small improvements.  The assignment showed me the importance of finishing something out completely to the best of my ability before claiming that I am finished with my work.  This way, I will always have better results!
